Holy Church of Agios Minas

The church of Agios Minas is the Metropolitan church of the island and is located in the center of the city on the homonymous street. The church was founded on February 3, 1869 and inaugurated on June 30, 1887. Its architectural type is cruciform dome, quadrangular temple with a shallow transversal nave and an elongated western nave covered with a P-shaped vault, according to Greek-Byzantine standards. The temple is all frescoed and painted in Western standards. The works began on September 10, 1919 and ended on November 1, 1925. The main icon painter was Dimitrios Ath. Sooutsos and his sons. In the temple there are also hagiographies of Dimitrios P. Andrianou of Salamis and Alekos Ath. Mathesi as well as of Ioannis Athanasios of Athens. There are also two portable icons in the marble shrines of St. Mina and of Ag. Black, which are the works of the great Neo-Greek and Salaminian painter of the "Munich School" Polychroni Lembesis. The marble despotic throne is the work of the Tinian sculptor Ioannis Halepas (1892) and the pulpit is the work of the Tinian sculptor Nikolaos Spanos (1894).
