Holy Church of Agios Dimitrios

The Church of St. Demetrius is the first parish of the island and the Metropolitan Church until 1935. The first church of St. Demetrius was built in 1695 and functioned until 1805. This church was small and made of humble materials. For the needs of at that time, a larger church had to be built. In 1874, due to increased parish needs, the church was extended to the West and the bell tower was added. The right aisle of the church (dedicated to Saint Raphael) is a 1973 building. Inside the church are works by the Tinian sculptor Ioannis Halepas (the Despotic Throne, Pulpit and Shrine). The iconostasis of the church as the two archangels Michael and Gabriel that are placed in frames, in the central aisle of the church, are painted by the great Neo-Hellenic and Salaminian painter (of the Munich School), Polychroni Lebesi. Also in the church there are images of Dimitrios P. Andrianos and Ioannis Athanasios. Of course, the most historic part of the church is the tomb of the leader of the Revolution of 1821 Georgios Karaiskakis. When Karaiskakis was injured in Faliro, he asked to be taken to Koulouri, to Ai Dimitris who had him as a patron to heal him. On the way to the island, his health worsened and he asked to be buried in Ai Dimitris. Karaiskakis cooled off inside the ship (23/4/1827). Thus, his body arrived at the port of Ampelakia, which they took to the house of Anagnostis Virvilis, (Friendly, chieftain and competitor of Karaiskakis), which was located near the temple of Agios Dimitrios. Then the pile was taken to the temple where the exodus ceremony and the burial took place. In 1835, with royal decrees of Otto, his remains were collected. Most of his bones went to Faliro where they were placed in a monument together with the bones of other competitors and a part of the bones remained in Agios Dimitrios. In 1996, the tomb was discovered following the actions of the then Mayor Athanasios Makris and the Ecclesiastical Council. In the courtyard of the temple there is a bust of the fighter. Also inside the temple and the marble shrine there are two silver icons of Saint Demetrius. One is dedicated to Georgios Karaiskakis and the other to Giorgakis Mathesis, Salaminios chieftain and founder of the temple. The temple celebrates on October 26. The temple is located in the center of the city of Salamina at the beginning of the street of the same name. Temple phone.: 2104653972. Pastor: Father Anargyros Eudaimon.
