Museum of Folk Art and History

In 1958, a group of young people of the time founded the "Euripides" Beautician and Cultural Association with the aim of establishing a Folklore Museum and Library. Since then, many objects and costumes from Salamis as well as books have been collected. The Folklore Museum of the Municipality has been housed since October of 1998 in two spacious halls of the New Town Hall - Cultural Center and bears the name of the Salaminian philologist, folklorist, researcher, Petros Fourikis Director of the Folklore Archives of the Academy of Athens until 1936. In this Museum are collected a multitude of Folklore objects of the life of Salamis and the history of the place. Particularly impressive is the rich collection of men's and women's local clothing that began to be made since 1958. The collection of zipunia (jackets), takes us back 200 years, gives us the image of the time and helps us see the variety and aesthetic perception in clothing of the place. Also in this Museum are presented furniture of various periods, looms, household utensils, tools of various professions, such as: the blacksmith, the carpenter, the shoemaker, the barber, the vintner, the beekeeper, the farmer, the sailor, the builder, etc., as well as various ceramic and copper objects of everyday life in original designs. The effigies of commercial and fishing ships (treadmills, trawlers, etc.), the watercolors of ships by the popular painter Aristides Glykas and others, came and were supplemented in 2012 by a number of nautical objects such as: booms, lanterns, compasses, beacons, ship rudders, which they remind the seamanship as well as the greatness of the maritime life of Salamis. The weapons of '21 (swords, jatagania, cariofilia, pistols, swords, etc.), the silver button of the coat of arms of General G. Karaiskakis, as well as the weapons of 1912-13 and 1940 underline the participation in the games and the glorious history of Salamis. The Museum's collections also include icons from the post-Byzantine period, ecclesiastical utensils and priestly objects (asterisks, loaves, discs, chalices, chalices, wooden seals, belts, buckles, etc.) as well as rare documents from the 18th and 19th centuries (dowry agreements, envelopes, public documents, etc.), musical instruments, coins and banknotes, porcelain, ceramics, rich photographic material from 1850 onwards, paintings. Since 1958, many people have worked to build this Museum. Many have offered items as well as sums of money.
