City of Salamis (Koulouri)

Koulouri is the largest city and the capital of the island of the same name. Its population is 25,370 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census. It is the seat of the Municipality of Salamina, as it emerged with the implementation of the Kallikratis Program and includes the entire island. The city is located on the western side of the island, at the mouth of the bay of Salamina. It is one of the largest island settlements in Greece. Description of the settlement The city of Salamina is built on the northernmost part of the island. It covers the area between the bay of Salamis. It is essentially the continuation of the urban planning of Ormos, the commercial and potential was discovered of Athens, which it is adjacent to. Its eastern part includes the district of Paloukia, where the main port of the island is located. Paloukia used to be a separate settlement. They were gradually united in urban planning with Salamis and formed a district of the city. The town has an archaeological museum housed since 2010 in the building of the old Kapodistrian school of the island and a folklore museum housed in a hall of the new town hall. Notable buildings of the city are the temples of Agios Minas and Agios Dimitrios located in its center. The church of Agios Minas is the metropolitan church of Salamis. It was inaugurated in 1869 and includes works by Giannoulis Halepas. The church of Agios Dimitrios was built in 1806. It includes sculptural works by Giannoulis Halepas and hagiographies by Polychronis Lebesi. In the temple is also the tomb of George Karaiskakis. This point of interest is coastal and urban.
