Mycenaean Acropolis of Kanakia

On the south-west coast of the island, on a coastal outcrop of the Kanaki area, the Mycenaean Acropolis of the 13th century BC is being developed, which includes a main palace complex with a twin palace of 750 sq.m. as well as a building complex of a craft character, as revealed the excavation team of the University of Ioannina. Since 2001, important movable finds have come to light: clay vessels, stone and metal tools, figurines and flywheels. It is worth mentioning separately an Egyptian warrior's armor plate with the seal of Ramses III, loot or souvenir alliance, as well as a false mouth amphora of commercial type, of Cypriot origin, proof of the metropolis's relations with Salamis, Cyprus.According to tradition, Teukros, when he was expelled by his father, Telamos, for not preventing the suicide of his brother Aedas in Troy, founded a new city in Cyprus with the name of his birthplace. On the south slope the older path was reshaped to provide smooth access to the main excavation area. This point of interest is coastal and urban. Suitable Visiting Season: All year round. It is not accessible by public transport. There is no cost or ticket. Visiting hours: Free. Source of photographic material: salamina.gr
